Professor David Purdie was born privately and educated publicly. Having spent most of his early years as a child, he went on to Ayr Academy and then Glasgow University where he read Medicine. David followed an academic and research career, his scientific work being on the diagnosis and treatment of the brittle bone disease, Osteoporosis.
Professor Purdie concluded his medical academic life in 2007 and is now a Hon. Fellow of the Institute for Advanced Studies in the Humanities, University of Edinburgh.
While devoting his time to writing, broadcasting and his public speaking, David is also Chairman of the Sir Walter Scott Club and the Edinburgh Burns Club - and a Patron of the JP Morgan Library, New York and of the National Galleries and National Library of Scotland.
As a freelance journalist, Professor Purdie has two humorous columns: ' The Major ' in the magazine Golf International and ' The Dean's Diary ' in the political website www.thinkscotland.org. David is a Parliamentary speechwriter and Editor for certain members of the House of Commons - and speech adviser to a number of major figures in the Sports and Entertainment fields. Professor Purdie also contributes to the broadsheet press and BBC radio on medical and scientific matters.
