Steve Hodge began his senior career with Nottingham Forrest, where he had his first encounter with the legendary Brian Clough. In an illustrious playing career, the talented Hodge also played for Aston Villa, Tottenham Hotspur, Leeds United and Queens Park Rangers. Steve was also capped 24 times by England and made it to two world Cups, Mexico in 1986 and Italy in 1990.
It was in Mexico that Steve played against Argentina and the famous Diego Maradona. This was the game in which Maradona scored his now infamous 'Hand of God' goal. After the game, Steve managed to exchange shirts with Maradona and the shirt has remained in Steve's possession to this day. He is often asked to bring it along to his many speaking engagements.
In 1989 Brian Clough brought Steve back to Nottingham Forrest and Steve was playing for the team against Liverpool, in the FA cup, on that fateful day in Sheffield, when 96 Liverpool supporters died in what has become known as the 'Hillsborough Disaster'.
Steve Hodge worked under some of the most successful managers in English football, not only Brian Clough but Terry Venables, Sir Bobby Robson, and Howard Wlikinson. He played alongside Hoddle, Waddle and Ardiles in the great Spurs midfield of the 1980s. He also played with some the most iconic players of the past decades Paul Gascoigne, Eric Cantona and Roy Keane.
In 2010, Steve's autobiography 'THE MAN WITH MARADONA'S SHIRT' was published. It is a fascinating, behind-the-scenes glimpse of life at the top in football.
