Scott Hastings is Scotland rugby’s most capped centre three quarter with 65 caps. He played in 51 Internationals with his brother Gavin and they are the only brothers to have played together in a British Lions Test match. A former captain and full-back with Scottish Schools, out of George Watson’s College in Edinburgh, he was first capped for Scotland a month after his 21st birthday in January 1986 against France.
Ever present in the Scotland team for a period of 11 years he captained the Barbarians against the 1993 All Blacks and Captained Scotland at 7 a-side rugby. He played in ten of Scotland’s fourteen World Cup games in 1987, 1991, 1995 and joined ITV’s commentary team for the 1999, 2003, 2007 and 2011 Rugby World Cups.
In 1989 Scott played in 9 of the 11 games with the British and Irish Lions on their winning tour of Australia, including the final two test matches a series that the Lions won 2-1. He also toured with the Lions in 1993 on the tour to New Zealand but returned to the UK after 5 weeks having sustained a facial injury one week before the first test match.
Scott Hastings was a full time rugby player with the Scottish Rugby Union and Edinburgh Reivers for two years before retiring from professional rugby in January 1999. He retired from playing with Watsonians after 19 seasons and 227 games for the First XV in April 2002 but still retains a role with the club as their commercial and sponsorship director.
At Watsonians he won the Scottish Premiership League in 1996/1997 and a prized Melrose 7’s winner’s medal in 1997. He still plays the odd social game, most recently in Dubai for a ‘British & Irish Lions Leg Ends’ side from which he is still recovering!
In recent years Scott has undertaken a number of 10KM fun runs including Edinburgh, Glasgow, Cardiff and New York; half marathons in Glasgow and Newcastle and has participated in the Hi-Tec Adventure Racing series (running, kayaking & mountain biking). A keen golfer with a bandit handicap of 15, Scott is married to Jenny and has 2 children, Corey and Kerry-Anne.
Scott previously worked for Platinum One, a sponsorship and events company. As an Account Director, Scott managed the Home of Golf Pavilion for Scottish Enterprise at the 2007 & 2008 Open Golf Championships and was Operations Director of the Golden Oldies World Rugby Festival held in Edinburgh in 2008. He is currently a freelance marketing and media consultant and undertakes numerous speaking engagements and motivational seminars for blue chip companies.
For three years, Scott was the main match commentator on Scottish Television’s Rugby Roundup programme and covered his first International match between Scotland and the Barbarians in May 2001 for Channel 5.
Scott Hastings continues to be involved in the media and writes the occasional newspaper column. He was a regular commentator with Sky Sports in their coverage of the Heineken Cup and IRB Sevens series and co-host of STV’s Rugby highlights programme on the Magners League. During the 6 Nations he commentated with the Irish channel, RTE.
