Miles Jupp is an actor, comedian and writer. He started performing comedy whilst studying at Edinburgh University and later became a regular on the Scottish circuit and the Edinburgh Fringe.
The Early Years
By 2001 Miles had won, So You Think You’re Funny at the Gilded Balloon and The Leicester Mercury Comedian Of The Year. He soon became a regular performer on both series of BBC Scotland’s Live Floor Show, and he was nominated for the Perrier Best Newcomer award for his debut Edinburgh solo show Gentlemen Prefer Brogues. This was followed by his 2005 show, Young Man In A Huff.

well as his own series for the station, Miles Jupp’s Real World (co-performed with Frankie Boyle), which was broadcast in 2005. He narrated two series of The Penny Dreadfuls Present The Brothers Faversham for Radio 7. Miles still continues to write material for TV and radio. He has now presented three series of BBC Radio 7s topical show, Newsjack, and made a number of appearances on Radio 4s The News Quiz. He has made three documentaries for Radio 4 with the producer David Stenhouse; By Jove, Carruthers! , Miles Jupp’s Muscular Lines and Fu Manchu In Edinburgh.
TV:
In 2009 he played John Duggan in Armando Iannucci’s political comedy The Thick Of It and Capt. Sebastien Fanshawe in Gary Tank Commander. He also appeared in the TV series Lip Service and in, Made In Dagenham, a film about the Ford machinists strikes of the 1960s which led to the equal pay act. He was in all four series of the CBeebies series Balamory. In March 2010 he completed filming Rev., a sitcom for BBC2 in which he stars alongside Tom Hollander, Olivia Coleman, Simon McBurney, Steve Evets, Ellen Thomas and Lucy Lieman. It was broadcast that summer and in early 2011 won the South Bank Sky Arts Award for Best Comedy. He has appeared numerous times on 8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown.
Stage:
Miles has appeared alongside Simon Munnery in two plays by Stewart Lee – Boswell & Johnson Late But Live and a companion piece about Elizabeth And Raleigh, both of which toured in 2008. He acted in Stewart Lee’s Comedy Vehicle. In 2019 he was off on a theatre tour with The Life I Lead, a play about the actor David Tomlinson probably best known as Mr Banks in the original Mary Poppins.
Film:
Miles’ film work has seen him appear in a number of feature films. These include, Harry Potter And The Order Of The Pheonix, Death Defying Acts, Sherlock Holmes and Is Anybody There? He also featured in the television films of She Stoops To Conquer and Irvine Welsh and Dean Kavanagh’s Wedding Belles. Miles played a small role in the feature film, Johnny English Reborn. In 2014 he appeared as a British officer in George Clooney’s war film The Monuments Men. This starred George Clooney, Matt Damon, Bill Murray, John Goodman and Cate Blanchett, to name a few.
In 2010 he performed for three weeks at the New Zealand Comedy Festival in Auckland and Wellington, and then toured Australia for two weeks. Also that year his show, Fibber In The Heat opened at the Edinburgh festival, and he also filmed an episode of Michael McIntyre’s Comedy Roadshow and played roles in Campus for Channel 4 and GaryTank Commander for BBC Scotland. He has since appeared on Have I Got News For You, Mock The Week, and Never Mind The Buzzcocks.
2015 saw Miles take over from Sandi Toksvig as presenter of BBC Radio 4’s The News Quiz. He followed a long line of presenters on the programme which has been running since 1977. Barry Norman was the original host. Miles hosted 10 series before leaving in 2019. During the 1980’s The News Quiz was changed for television. This inspired the creation of Have I Got News For You which Miles has often appeared in.
2018 was another busy year for Miles, when he voiced Blackberry in the BBC/Netflix version of Watership Down. He then he guested on Frankie Boyle’s 2018 New World Order on BBC2.
