Tom Conti is a Tony and Olivier Award Winner, Oscar and Golden Globe Nominee. He was also voted ‘Favourite West End Actor in the last 25 Years’ by theatregoers. Tom has appeared in over 25 feature films including such classics as ‘Reuben Reuben’, ‘Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence’ and ‘Shirley Valentine’ and his theatre work includes the multi award winning Broadway and West End play, ‘Whose Life Is It Anyway?’
Born in Paisley near Glasgow, Tom’s first venture into theatre was with the Dundee Repertory in 1959 but it was in the 70’s and 80’s when he became a household name, appearing in the 1977 period drama ‘The Duellists’ and later that same year, ‘The Haunting Of Julia’ with Mia Farrow. It was in 1983 that Tom starred alongside David Bowie in the war drama ‘Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence’ and in the same year, he played Scottish poet, Gowan McGland in the classic comedy ‘Reuben, Reuben’. The mid to late 80’s saw more success for Tom in even more high profile films including ‘Heavenly Pursuits’, ‘The Quick and the Dead’ and ‘Shirley Valentine’. During this time, he continued to build a strong following with theatre audiences here in the UK and also in America.
Tom had also started writing and in 2004, his debut novel ‘The Doctor’ was published. It tells the story of a former Secret Operations pilot with the Intelligence Services, who attempts to start a new life as a flying doctor pilot in Africa.
2010 saw Tom touring in Eric Chappell’s comedy gem ‘Wife after Death’. He not only starred in the play but also directed it. Tom also took some time off to get back on our television screens, as a special guest in the long running and popular period drama, ‘Lark Rise To Candleford’. Tom played the mysterious recluse Mr Reppington, alongside Julia Sawalha and Ben Aldridge.
2011 will be another busy year for Tom. He will be appearing alongside The West Wing’s Richard Schiff in the play ‘Smash’, opening at the Menier Chocolate Factory, Southwark.
Tom is also well versed in the works of Scotland’s national bard, Robert Burns and he is a superb choice for Burns Suppers with his charming delivery ‘The Toast Tae The Lassies’. He is now available for all types of corporate events, after dinner engagements and general appearances.
