Isobel Rutter is an award-winning speaker, actress and playwright. She is a highly entertaining and likeable performer with a personality which easily fills any stage. With her natural talent and immaculate comedy timing, Isobel has successfully mastered the art of delivering hilarious stand-up comedy routines and after-dinner speeches.
Isobel is comfortable speaking at all types of engagements is happy to take a brief from clients. She has spoken at venues all over the UK and abroad.
Isobel Rutter has her own one-woman show: "Bits & Boobs" which always attracts superb reviews and has been performed at various venues, including The Pavilion Theatre, Glasgow. In the show Isobel excels as a performer and her talent as a writer really shines through.
Isobel has great versatility and her interests are diverse; a gifted singer and musician, she covers a wide range of musical styles and thanks to her Hebridean roots, Isobel also sings in Gaelic. She was the conductor of Aberfeldy Gaelic Choir from 2007 to 2009, bringing them to the height of success and first place at a Mod within just a few weeks of becoming their musical director.
One of Isobel's great passions is the works of the national Bard, Robert Burns, and she is happy to perform at both formal and informal Burns Suppers, either in a singing or speaking role. She has performed at numerous Burns Suppers over the years, both at home and abroad.
However... there is another side to Isobel Rutter and she is the ideal choice if you require an inspirational speaker. Having survived breast cancer three times, Isobel is often asked to talk about her experiences with the disease. Although only her left breast was affected, Isobel ultimately made the decision to have a double mastectomy and she talks candidly about her several subsequent unsuccessful attempts at reconstructive surgery. The final attempt was a spectacular failure which left Isobel not only without the breasts she desperately sought, but with other major body disfigurements. As Isobel struggled with coming to terms with her 'new' body and the long road back to health, life delivered another blow and her beloved husband died within 4 weeks of a cancer diagnosis, which had a profound effect on her life.
As a reluctant widow, a cancer survivor and a woman living without breasts, she has a truly inspirational story, which she tells with emotion, humour and panache! Isobel seeks to inform, amuse and inspire and to dispel the myths about life as a woman living without breasts. But - there is also a deeper, more though-provoking message contained within her words, and she challenges all of us - men and women - to re-examine our values and to contemplate just what is truly important in our day-to-day lives.
"As a result of the gift that was my cancer, I know that we must never underestimate the power of the human spirit and that it is possible to emerge on the other side of a challenging experience, perhaps not unscathed or unmarked, but adapted and improved."
"Cancer hasn't changed who I am, rather it has revealed who I am. I am spiritually complete even if I am not physically complete, and my body image - something which had seemed so monumentally important and fundamental to my happiness - is now irrelevant."
"Physical perfection is impossible to achieve and we need to learn to embrace the flexibility of imperfection. I have thrown off the chains of the quest for perfection, and the freedom it brings is priceless."
TESTIMONIALS:
"Having heard, and experienced, Isobel speak twice in two totally different environments, and to two totally different audiences I can promise you that you will never forget her story, her passion, but above all, her humour. Story telling is an art, and Isobel is a master. She will hold you in her hand and make you laugh, cry...and think. My team still talk about her story and her impact months after they met her."
Simon O'Leary - Head of Volunteer Fundraising, Cancer Research UK

"Isobel first became involved with our charity when she played the lead role in "A Happy Medium" at Eastwood Park Theatre and successfully raised over £16,000. She has also spoken at our lunches and dinners in the Glasgow Hilton where she entertained us in her own funny and distinctive style. She staged her one-woman show 'Bits & Boobs' on our behalf and again realised a formidable amount. Isobel is a very talented lady - actor, singer, after-dinner speaker and comedienne."
Alasdair Don - Breast Cancer 2000
