Mark Nelson is a Scottish comedian of the Year who appeared in The List magazine’s 100 Hottest Scottish Stars.
Early Days:
Mark gained an MA Degree in Politics from Glasgow University which he puts to good use in his routines. He started out in comedy in 2005 and by 2006 the awards started flowing in. His mix of dark humour, cutting observations and clever one-liners saw Mark become a stand-up to be reckoned with. With an effortless, likeable manner on stage and confident delivery, Mark often has his audiences laughing at things they probably feel they shouldn’t be. Writing:
Mark Nelson’s work in Scotland soon caught the eyes and ears of further afield. He was writing material for Jason Manford and Russell Howard. Around the same time Television and Radio had beckoned. He first was heard on radio in 2013 and won a Scottish Comedy Radio award. In 2014 he worked with Susan Calman for BBC Scotland and latter featured on BBC’s One Show. More recently, Mark has appeared on BBC Scotland as a panellist on Des Clarke’s Breaking The News.
The Fringe:
Mark has been a regular star at the Edinburgh Fringe. Since 2010 he had performed over nine years, then Covid abruptly stopped everything. His new show for 2020, Once Upon A Time In The West had been postponed just after it’s first extremely successful preview in Glasgow. Never deterred, Mark went virtual and became host of ‘Saturday Night at the Stand’. Despite the challenges of presenting live comedy virtually the series ended up being the UK’s most successful, longest running, live streaming show. Viewers were tuning in from all over. Mark’s audience was International having gone over to Australia in 2017 to record his show for the Just For Laughs comedy festival at the Sydney Opera House.
Virtual:
Mark started producing a series of on-line clips called ‘News At’ which were taken up by BBC Scotland’s Short Stuff. These starred his daughter Isla who at the time was 2 yrs old. You can see one of the clips in the videos on the right.
