John MacKay is a journalist who has been STV’s main news anchor for over 15 years. Currently John presents STV’s News at 6 and the popular current affairs programme, Scotland Tonight, which goes out twice a week.
John started his journalistic career with the Sunday Post newspaper and later joined BBC Radio Scotland in the late 1980’s. He then went on to become presenter of BBC Scotland’s national news programme, Reporting Scotland.
In 1994 John switched channels to present STV’s regional news programme, Scotland Today. John co-hosted the programme alongside Shereen Nanjiani until it was relaunched in 2006 to it’s present format.
John MacKay has also worked on a number of non news programmes and is the author of three books about life in the Hebridies. His first book The Road Dance has been re-released as a film edition to celebrate the release of the film adaptation. It was released into cinemas in 2022. The book was also the winner of the Edinburgh International Film Festival Audience Award in 2021.
