Steve Backshall MBE is one of the busiest presenters on television. These days he is a house-hold name but also a motivating, charismatic, and highly energetic speaker. Steve Backshall regularly working for the BBC’s Natural History Unit. He has had his own season of programmes alongside legends David Attenborough and Bruce Parry. Before that, he was ‘Adventurer in Residence’ at the National Geographic Channel. He is a patron for a number of charities and an ambassador for the Scout Association.
2023 saw Steve on our screens with the latest in his phenomenally successful Deadly series: “Deadly Mission Shark“. Here he took ten children aged between 12 and 14 to the Bahamas. The children learned to scuba dive in preparation to dive with sharks, including a Hammerhead. Whilst there, the children undertook environmental projects which highlighted shark conservation. Steve hoped to inspire future generations in protecting our oceans and the creatures living in them.
Also in 2023, Steve Backshall has inspired audiences across the UK. His sell-out theatre show Ocean was seen by more than 80,000 people in it’s first year.
Steve captivates millions with his TV shows and expeditions. These range from the BAFTA-winning Deadly 60, to the critically acclaimed Big Blue Live. Others were, Alaska Live, Lost Land of the Volcano and Lost Land of the Jaguar. There was also Extreme Mountain Challenge, Down the mighty River with Steve Backshall and Expedition with Steve Backshall.
Steve’s Great passion is discovery – investigating new places and new species. He is prepared to go to the ends of the Earth to satisfy this passion. Here is a short film from Steve when he travelled to Baffin Island between Canada and Greenland. He wanted to climb Mount Asgard a twin-peaked mountain with an elevation of 2,015 metres. Steve’s expeditions have taken him across the world in search of the extraordinary. He was part of the BBC’s hugely successful Lost Land of the Jaguar. Also we saw Lost Land of the Volcano and Lost Land of the Tiger in the following years. He made the first descent into an enormous, unexplored sinkhole for BBC1’s Emmy-nominated epic Expedition Borneo. Then he trekked into the heart of America’s most inhospitable terrain for Discovery’s Expedition Alaska.
For the BBC’s Secret Wilderness: Japan he met giant salamanders and feisty Macaque monkeys. He also came face-to-face with King Cobras for Sky One’s Inside King Cobra programme. Closer to home, Steve has presented Britain’s Lost World, Extreme Caving, Inside Out. Also The Nature of Britain and, famously, CBBC’s The Really Wild Show.
In 2023 Steve Backshall and his friend Tom McGibbon broke the Guinness World Record for paddling the length of the River Thames in a Kayak. It was 125 miles from Lechdale in the Cotswolds to Teddington in Greater London.
