Brian Sims

Brian Sims is one of international motorsport's most experienced and successful sales exponents, having personally secured in excess of £60 million of sponsorship deals at all levels of the sport, up to and including F1. He has enjoyed a colourful motorsport career spanning nearly 37 years. Prior to this he was a successful salesman with Xerox and Goodyear, before becoming the UK Sales Training Director for ITT, the American corporation.
Brian is the author of a highly acclaimed book on the subject of securing sports sponsorship, (Sports Sponsorship - A Professional Guide) the second edition of which was published in October 2011. It is prescribed reading in many universities and sells well internationally.
He is an accomplished broadcaster and speaker, as well as a much sought after sales trainer.
His career in sport included 11 years as a championship-winning professional racing driver, both in the UK and in South Africa. He also spent some years as the Marketing Director of the Kyalami F1 Grand Prix Circuit in South Africa, at the time that the SA F1 GP was a highlight of the F1 calendar. After retiring as a driver, Brian established South Africa's first ever professional motor racing school, securing substantial sponsorship deals in the process.
On returning to England, he established the MIA (Motorsport Industry Association), securing prestigious sponsorship from Andersen Consulting, Hewlett Packard and Ford Motor Company. This was the very first trade association established to represent the British motorsport industry. The industry is today worth in excess of £5 billion per year and employs more than 45,000 people. The MIA now has over 300 member companies, representing nearly 75% of the industry's turnover. It was recently described in Business F1 magazine as being the second most powerful motorsport organisation globally. The MIA Industry Achievement Awards Reception is held annually at the House of Lords, attended by a host of highly influential motorsport industry, Government and Education figures. Brian is one of only three MIA Honorary Life Members.
After three years as CEO of the MIA, Brian moved back into the world of sponsorship and became Head of Motorsport for the international API Agency, owned by Alan Pascoe, former Vice President of London's Olympic Bid Committee. The agency represented the Benetton F1 Team and within 12 months of joining, Brian secured over $14,000,000 of sponsorship for the Team from blue chip companies such as FedEx and Gillette. Subsequently, he became the Benetton F1 Team Commercial Director, reporting directly to Rocco Benetton until the company's sale to Renault in 2000.
Following several years of high profile sales and marketing consultancy with international motorsport, Brian then spent 4 years in South Africa, establishing the South African Motorsport Industry Association. Its aim was to formalise, structure and promote a sustainable motorsport industry, which included using the attraction of motorsport as a way of encouraging youngsters from diverse communities, including the previously disadvantaged, into engineering skills training. Brian secured substantial sponsorship for the project from PetroSA, the state owned oil and petroleum corporation and from Dell Computers. In August 2010, as planned, he stood down as its CEO, to allow a South African to take over at the helm of this dynamic organisation.
His latest
major sponsorship acquisition deal is a 3-year agreement with specialist insurance group, HISCOX, on behalf of the Official Aston Martin Racing Team, Jota. The deal has been extensively publicised through a hoarding campaign in many main-line railway stations, such as Waterloo and Liverpool Street.
Brian is rapidly becoming a sought-after Guest Lecturer. In the past few months he has delivered sponsorship acquisition lectures and training seminars for the World Academy of Sport, the prestigious CIES FIFA Masters programme, the British Racing Drivers Club, Swansea Metropolitan University and is a Guest Speaker at the Business of Sport Conference at Wembley Stadium in 2012. He is the keynote speaker at Oxford Brookes University graduation in 2012.
