Dr John Reid MP

The Rt Hon Dr John Reid MP is considered to be one of the most experienced politicians in the UK. He is also viewed by colleagues as one of the most popular and colourful characters in politics.
The Lanarkshire member of Parliament made history by becoming Northern Ireland's first Catholic Secretary of State, overseeing historic developments in the recent successful peace process. He served as Defence Secretary during hostilities in Iraq and Afghanistan and also served in the highly sensitive role of Home Secretary. During his decade long ministerial career, John Reid MP undertook nine different ministerial roles.
Born in the Scottish Mining village of Bellshill, he graduated from Stirling University with an honours degree in history and a PhD in economic history. Dr John Reid MP has now added the titles of Chairman of Celtic Football Club and University Fellow to that of former Cabinet Minister, folk singer, guitarist, pianist and manual labourer.
One of the most outstanding advocates of Blair government policies, John Reid is both a commanding figure and speaker, inside and outside the House of Commons.
Although he was tipped to be a front runner for the Labour Party leadership, John surprised many observers by standing down from the cabinet, the same day that Tony Blair stood down as Prime Minister. However, he has always maintained that he would keep all his options open and would always be master of his own destiny.
Dr Reid has announced he will be standing down as MP for Airdrie and Shotts at the next general election.
