David Mercer


 David Mercer
David Mercer was born in Swansea in April 1950, and now lives in Wendover in Buckinghamshire with his wife Sue. He has one daughter, Caroline, who was born in April 1978, two step children, Liz and Chris, and two grand children

He played most sports while at school and university, enjoying most success in tennis. He won the Welsh Junior Doubles title in 1968, and in 1969 captained the Nottingham University tennis team.

In 1970 he graduated from Nottingham with a Degree in Law, qualified as a solicitor in 1973, and began practising in Swansea that year.

From 1973 to 1984 David umpired at Wimbledon, taking charge of the Mens Doubles Final in 1983 and the Mens Singles Final, between Jimmy Connors and John McEnroe, in 1984. He umpired at numerous other tournaments and Davis Cup ties.

He began broadcasting on sport in 1979 after winning a competition organised by BBC Wales. He became a full-time broadcaster in 1984 when he joined BBC Radio Sport in London, and was appointed its tennis correspondent in 1990. Two years later he joined the BBC Television commentary team.

He also commentates on tennis for Eurosport, ESPN Star Sports of Singapore and a number of other television stations around the world. He is a Director and part owner of Tennis Radio Network Limited. He also commentates on badminton, rowing and rugby union.

He has worked on, and provided voice-overs for, various television magazine programmes on golf, rugby union and tennis.

He writes regularly for a number of tennis magazines, and occasionally for newspapers including The Guardian and The Observer.

1992 - Date. BBC Television Sport as part of the tennis commentary team . Also comments on rugby union and badminton.

1984 - 1992. BBC Radio Sport commentatorpresenterreporter. Appointed tennis correspondent in September 1990. Commentatedreported on tennis, rugby union, badminton, snooker, squash, ice hockey, rowing, football, skiing, skating and american football. Presented Sports desk on Radios 1,2,4 and 5, and programmes such as soccer specials on Radio 5, and Test Match Special on Radio 3.

1989 Commentated and presented various programmes on tennis shown on ITV.

1990 - 1999 Presentercommentator on ATP Tour tennis highlights programmes produced by Trans World International, transmitted worldwide.

1992-1993 Part scripting and voicing official film of Wimbledon Championships.

1992 - Date Various commentaries on tennis, rugby union and badminton and rowing for Eurosport.

1992 - 1996 Part voicing Golfing World series of videos produced by Trans World International.

1992 Commentating on semi-finals and final of Benson & Hedges Ice Hockey Cup for Sky Sports.

1992- 1995 Commentating on a number of tennis tournaments for Prime Network (USA).

1993 - 1996 Commentating on Qatar Open Tennis for Qatar TV.

1993 - 1994 Provided voice-over for daily Australian Open highlights tennis programmes produced by Trans World International.

1993 - 1996 Commentating on a number of tennis tournaments for Sky Sports.

1993 - 1999 Commentating on US Open Tennis Championships for USA Networks.

1994 - Date Commentating on Dubai Open Tennis for Dubai TV.

1994 - 1999 Acting as main commentator on University Boat Race for BBC Radio Sport.

1995 - 1998 Working as an Assistant Producer on Sports Centre International, a daily half hour sports news programme produced by Trans World International for ESPN International.

1996 Commentating on Grand Slam Cup tennis for FilmNet Central Europe.

1998 - Date Commentating on US Open Tennis Championships for ESPNSTAR Sports of Singapore.

1998 Commentating on various rugby union matches for Channel Fives Rugby Express programme.

1998 Commentating and presenting coverage of the Asian Games in Bangkok for ESPN Star Sports.

2000 - Date Commentating on Masters Series of tennis tournament for ISL Productions.

1981 - 1987 Member of the Sports Council for Wales

1973 - 1984 Tennis umpire at Wimbledon including Mens Singles Final in 1984 and Mens Doubles Final in 1983. Also acted as neutral umpire at a number of Davis Cup ties. Member of the Committee of Management of the British Tennis Umpires Association from 1982 to 1984.

1973-Date Member of Professional Tennis Coaches Association of Great Britain.

1984 - Date Member of the Society of Lawn Tennis Referees.

1986 - Date Member of Committee of Badminton Writers Association.

1995 - 1997 Chairman of Lawn Tennis Writers Association.
