John McEnroe

 John McEnroe
John McEnroe was born in Wiesbaden, Germany, on Feb. 16, 1959 and resides in New York and Malibu, Calif.

Considered one of the most technically perfect players in the history of tennis, McEnroe was ranked as the world's No. 1 player for four consecutive years (1981-84). During his 16-year professional career, he captured 77 singles titles, including four U.S. Open championships and three Wimbledon titles.

He joined the circuit in 1978 and it took him only three years to attain the No. 1 ranking. The 1980 Wimbledon final, between McEnroe and Bjorn Borg, is considered by many tennis experts to be the best match ever. Borg defeated McEnroe in a five set thriller 1-6, 7-5, 6-3, 6-7, 8-6, capturing his fifth straight Wimbledon title. In 1981, both McEnroe and Borg returned to the Wimbledon final for the much anticipated rematch and after four close sets, McEnroe had his first Wimbledon title.

In doubles, McEnroe is recognised as the best player of all time. He was ranked 1 for a record 257 weeks and captured a total of 74 titles, including eight Grand Slams. During the 199394 season, McEnroe played in a special event on the Champions Tour, the Champions Challenge in Saint Petersburg, Russia.
