Chris Barrie is best known for being the deeply sad Arnold Rimmer in Red Dwarf. A man who only made love to a woman once in his entire life (and this was only because she had been hit on the head by a winch). He is also known for is performance as the marvellously annoying leisure centre manager Gordon Brittas in The Brittas Empire.
Chris Barrie appeared as the butler alongside Angelina Jolie in both the Lara Croft Tomb Raider movies.
Originally an impressionist at the Comedy Store, Chris’s TV career began with a memorable contribution to Jasper Carrott’s Election Night Special. He was quickly signed up as a cornerstone of the pioneering Spitting Image team. Chris provided voices for Ronald Reagan, Prince Charles, David Coleman, Paul Daniels, Barry Norman and also John Cole.
In 2004 Chris Barrie was regularly back on our screens with his programmes Massive Engines and also Massive Machines. Chris presented them for the Discovery Channel. later in 2006 a third programme Massive Speed was released, with the first two Massive series being released on DVD. Next was two series of Britain’s Greatest Machines which aired with 8 episodes in 2009 and 2010.
Speaking and Hosting:
As well as speaking after dinner Chris has been very active on the corporate entertainment scene. Whether he is hosting an awards ceremony, linking conference presentations, contributing to the launch of a new product or delivering an after-dinner speech, he will provide the right balance of entertainment for the company and the event. Chris is a hugely popular host and conference link presenter. He would often appears in the guise of a close relative of Gordon Brittas to bless the proceedings the Brittas way.
In recent years Chris has hosted the Network Rail Awards, the Utility Industry Achievement Awards, the Specialists in Construction Awards, to name but a few. Born and raised in Northern Ireland, Chris Barrie now lives near Maidenhead. Chris has a wife and children, two dogs and a growing collection of classic cars and motorbikes.
Red Dwarf Returns:
2009 saw the return of Red Dwarf. It was brand new and with the original cast on the DAVE channel. Chris Barrie (Arnold Rimmer), Craig Charles (Dave Lister), Robert Llewelen (Kryton) and Danny John-Jules (Cat) returned for a three-part special. This was more than 20 years after it first aired. But it wasn’t finished yet. In 2020 a Red Dwarf special was aired, Red Dwarf: The Promised Land. Most recently, Chris announced there may be more new shows on the way. This would be to coincide with Red Dwarf’s 35th anniversary in 2023.
