Ian Hislop

Ian HislopIan Hislop first submitted to Private Eye in 1980 when he satirised the Room of My Own feature in the Mirror newspapers colour supplement with a funny article on how an IRA prisoner on the dirty protest has decorated his cell in a fetching brown.

Although Ian was only an occasional writer for Private Eye he was surprised to be made deputy editor while Richard Ingrams, one of the creators of Private Eye was on holiday. In 1986 Ingrams gave up the job as editor for good and appointed Ian as the editor. Ian remembers his exact words 'Do you want the job?' Simple as that. And being that age I said 'Yeah, sure'. You have an amazing confidence when you are young. I thought, 'Yeah, I can do that'.

As any new editor would do, Ian made changes to the magazine increasing the amount of serious coverage of local government and created the feature Doing the Rounds which focused on hospitals and the health service.Yet it was through Private Eye that Ian made many enemies. Though The Eye never actually destroyed someone, it did set the ball rolling. When it came to Robert Maxwell Ians response was he destroyed himself in the end. Which is technically true.

As for other journalism, Ian has written for The Spectator, The Mail on Sunday, Financial Times, The Guardian, The Literary Review and Time Out. He is a weekly columnist The Listener and The Sunday Telegraph.

In 1990 Ian appeared as a regular team captain on the topical news quiz Have I Got News For You and it has been going strong for 12 years, it has even beat Big Brother in the ratings. Since the shows first broadcast he has never missed an episode. The following year Ian won the British Society of Magazine Editors annual award The Editors Editor award.

RECENT TESTIMONIALS
''I just wanted to let you know that Ian Hislop was absolutely superb last night. He was extremely funny and came over as very endearing. Many people said we could not top Rory Bremner but after seeing Ian some people thought he was actually better because he was talking about real life events, where Rory has more of a fantasy world! People on Ian's table said he was an absolutely delightful dinner guest. So all in all he was an extremely important part of a very successful event and I would highly recommend him!''
Simon McVicker. The Manufacturing Technologies Association Jan. 2008
