Roger Black is an athlete and one of the country’s most successful sportsmen. He represented Great Britain for fourteen years at the highest level in the world of athletics. Born in Portsmouth on the 31 March 1966, Roger was educated at Portsmouth Grammar School. Subsequently he went on to read medicine at Southampton University. He is particularly admired for his triumphs over adversity, overcoming serious injuries and a rare heart valve condition to go on to become a world champion.
As one of the leading Motivational Speakers in the UK, Roger adds value to corporate conferences by motivating, inspiring and also entertaining audiences from many organisations.
TELEVISION
Roger has presented for BBC South, BBC Breakfast News, BBC 6 o’clock News and News 24. In 1998, Roger was signed to BBC Sport and has since presented the Sydney 2000 Olympics, the World Athletics Championships 2001 in Canada and the 2002 Commonwealth Games. He has also presented the 2002 European Championships from Vienna and the World Championships from Paris in 2003.
In addition, Roger has appeared regularly as a guest on numerous prime-time TV programmes. These include A Question of Sport and They Think It’s All Over. He co-presented the last series of Tomorrow’s World and the BBC’s award winning City Hospital. In 2004 he took part in Strictly Come Dancing on BBC1. Then in 2006, he took part in BBC One’s Celebrity MasterChef where he reached the final. One of his earlier appearances was when in 1999 Michael Aspel ambushed Roger at Heathrow Airport with his big red book. This was for an appearance on This Is Your Life.
SPORTING PROFILE
Roger won fifteen major Championship Medals. These included European, Commonwealth and World Championship Gold Medals. His greatest achievements were winning the Olympic 400 metres Silver Medal in 1996. Also, being part of the Gold Medal winning 4 x 400 metres relay team at the 1991 World Championships. His 1997 4 x 400 metres Silver in Athens was changed to Gold. This was after the United States team runner Antonio Pettigrew’s admission to taking performance-enhancing drugs.
Roger Black was also British Men’s Team Captain and was awarded the M.B.E. in 1992.
